Show 'em whatcha working with

I can't believe it's 11 already. Stephen and I were talking about how time just disappears these days... and then when we realized we'd been at dinner for 1.5 hours. It really didn't feel like it was that long. I guess people weren't kidding when they said time speeds up as you get older.

I'm trying to be smart and ice my leg after kickball yesterday (WAKA - Dogtown). One of the guys on the other team said "I like Yahoo better" while we saying "good game" to each other. I mean, come on!

I was smart earlier and didn't go to yoga class. It was sad, I really like yoga... and my yoga mat.. and my yoga pants.. and the part at the end where we get to lie on the floor. No really, it's great.

Anyway, lots of things are going on. Summer interns start next week and the week after so my office is having a bunch of fun events. People wise there are a couple of new developments and drama (of course). I haven't seen Mike in two weeks (he's in Paris) but it really doesn't feel that way.

There's a lot on my mind right now yet I'm really happy and calm.. and cold because of the ice pack ;)

Too Nerd, Too Nerd to quit hey hey

Apparently, I'm pretty nerdy/geeky/dorky.. at least according to the quiz below. Before you all say duh, I was actually a bit shocked. Must be all that Google rubbing off on me ;)

Modern, Cool Nerd
82 % Nerd, 52% Geek, 43% Dork

For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.

A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.

A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd.

Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one up there, winning the million bucks)!

Congratulations!

Thanks Again! -- THE NERD?
Things I've learned this month

Things I've learned from my first month at Google Santa Monica

- Kicking a big exercise ball around the office is considered normal
- My HR person is a member of WAKA (World Adult Kickball Association)
- I'm allowed to have playdates
- My building is small enough to get to know people in other departments
- There are two couches, 3 trampoline like chairs, a giant beanbag, an old fashioned candy machine and a massage chair directly around the corner from my cubicle not to mention the kitchen/bar/snack area if you continue in that direction
- I now appreciate the hours of 11-3 because we have the most fun EVER
- People look at me funny when I mention Outlook
- Sometimes you just have to play ping-pong/foosball/pacman/scooter tag... right?
- GoogleTalking is encouraged
- We are all baristas in training
- I personally know my IT/HR people and they rock
- Playing with toys at your desk just increases creativity
- There are people here who have my major!
- The mini circle rugs double as security devices to keep people from getting to the snacks, right Stephen?
- Sunset shots on the deck/roof is brilliant
- There's a surf board in my lobby (hang 10^100 bro!)

And last but not least,
- I really like it here :)

Jo is so right about AOL horoscopes

Capricorn (Dec. 22 - Jan. 19)
The lunar dynamics could bring storms of feelings into your life now, but this may be exactly what you most need. Your emotional reactions are intense today as they flush the stagnant waters out of your life. Throughout the day, you become more determined to stir up issues that can bring change. Meanwhile, others are depending on you in the workplace, and this motivates you to take on even more responsibility.

Dear whomever writes AOL horoscopes, this one is SO yesterday!

Horoscope time

Following my sister's horoscope example:

Capricorn (Dec. 22 - Jan. 19)
If you cannot be forthcoming with what you want from others now, they may assume the wrong thing. In other words, what you don't say today can be as significant as what you do. Go beyond your comfort zone and speak your piece. It's better if your feelings, however irrational, are out in the open.

Intereeeeesting...

Words inspired by the Emmys

On Mike's insistance, below are are some unedited words inspired by the Emmys. Enjoy

I have to say, I kinda like being 22. I can still just worry about getting my water from the refrigerator during a commercial on the Emmys while wondering if I’m eating too many jelly beans. I guess you could say that’s a good life. Living in a random woman’s house with my best friend in a city I never thought I’d stay in for more than a few days, that’s living the life right. I mean, look at the Emmys; there’re a 10 minute drive from my/her house, 10 minutes without traffic. Does that include a freeway? After a month, I’m still not sure how to get to the Chinese Theater. And that’s important right? Knowing how to get to famous landmarks of the Hollywood centric city or county (what is it again?) or feeling of Los Angeles. Meanwhile, as I’m writing this seemingly random tribute to this period in my life, the theme song from some 1980’s TV hotspot is being performed on the Emmys. The song essentially goes, I’m going to live forever, Baby remember my name. Oh wait, it’s from Fame. Only the most dramatic tribute to the life of musical theater. Again, something else I should know but don’t. I need to mention this because it amazes me. 4 out of 5 of the male guest actors nominated were from Will and Grace. Where was I? Oh, wait. The Olympics just won an award for direction. The Olympics? Since when are they part of the entertainment world of Hollywood. Correction, since when I have I not realized that EVERYTHING is part of the entertainment world. The Daily Show just won for best writing. Best writing. One day, when I’m not paying tribute to the best year there was and could never be I’m going to write my story. Than again, I am 22. And the only thing I have to worry about is whether my favorite shows and stars are going to win the Emmys while I write some semi-wittingly weird commentary on my life. Notice this is all I have to worry about. The fact that David Letterman is still just as annoying as ever doesn’t bother me at all. But, who am I kidding. There are plenty of other things that should concern me. Things like whether Mike really is the hottest roommate I’ve ever had and the nature of domestic wasps. David Letterman is giving a tribute to Johnny Carson. He is the beginning of an era of classic television. An era that is slowly disappearing, slipping away into the need for reality. Think about that. Yeah you, the poor person who is choosing to suffer through this random diatribe. People want to watch reality. I’m only 22 and frankly, the Emmys are more interesting than a piece on the human brain at the moment but, that’s still scary. We are slowly losing our imagination. We? No wait, that’s just politically correct. I know some people who still value the ability to look at a rock and see a future in neural networks. Or speak in strange dialects to appease the curiosity of an amazing mind. Who knew we were complete and utterly well... normal. Turns out the rest of the country- wait, I’m being distracted by live TV. What was I just saying? Oh right, reality TV is taking over the world. Now, back to the Emmys.
Last Day of Undergraduate Classes Ever

It is so great to be able to look back on 4 years of college and know that I have accomplished exactly if not more than I wanted. I cannot explain the thrill of realizing that in two weeks I will be an official scientist (BS Cognitive Science). It's amazing for me to think back to what I have been a part of at CMU, how lucky I am to have contributed to research ranging from robotics to cognitive psychology. If someone had mentioned to a 10 year old me that this was my future, my excitement would have been unparalleled.

Next up: a year off and than graduate school.. I'm thinking Caitlin Lovett, PhD ;)

Just Another Day

Once again I have failed to update this thing in ages. It's already April. I'm graduating in 2(3?) weeks. I'm in shock, I'm in denial. 4 years of college are about to end. 4 years. It doesnt feel that long. In fact, it feels like I just graduated from high school. I'm leaving with a BS in Cognitive Science and minor in Computer Science. I'd planned on this major/minor combination since freshman year but it's still crazy to think that I've actually accomplished it. Well.. almost. Another 2 weeks to go.

I feel really old and young at the same time. My sister is starting the college process which is just weird and unbelievable. That makes me feel sooo old. Not that being 22 in itself doesnt make me feel old but just thinking about her being in college is crazy. At the same time, I still almost feel like a teenager. I don't feel like I look like I'm in my 20s. In fact, I can't believe that this is it for my body for the rest of my life. A part of me thinks I should still be growing. It's odd how that works.

I would update on my life in general but right now it's just too complicated and wordy. I'll just say that 4 of my close friends are going to be in California with me (2 in SF, 2 in LA) and that makes me really happy. It's funny to think back to freshman year and whether I would have expected any of this and although I would like to say no.. I think that a part of me almost knew.

I'll be back in SF on the 24th. For some of you that means I'll get to see you soon, for others I miss you so much but I'll see you in a few months.

You know you have a cool sister when even your friends understand her inner attic.

Love you JoJo ;)

Mobile Robot Competition

Today was the last day of Mobile Robot Programming! Mobile Robot was this huge robotics course I took this semester. We're talking 12+ hours a week of work. It was an awesome class and I'm so happy I took it and so I proud I did really well. I now understand, and yes you can all laugh at me for this that I enjoy programming.. alot.
Anyway, we had the last of the final competitions today. Each team used two robots to race through a maze and retrieve as many "golds" for points as possible. The robots communicated back forth via wireless.
We took pictures so you can enjoy these great robots :)
Enjoy!

Our TA explaining the rules to "B" before the start of round 2.

Our robots in action.

"B" picks up a gold!

O' beautiful, for spacious skies
But now those skies are threatening
They're beating plowshares into swords
For this tired old man that we elected king
Armchair warriors often fail
And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers clean up all details
......
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence

- Don Henley, "The End of the Innocence"

This is for those Bush supporters who are about to lose their jobs. This is for the Bush supporters who will lose their husbands, wives and children to the war in Iraq. This is for the Bush supporters who will enter poverty. This is for the Bush supporters who will die from lack of health care. This is for the Bush supporters who are not part of his elite. This is for all of you that could not see beyond your own inner world. The next 4 years will be the end of your innocence.
